What a Service Metadata Publisher does

An SMP is the Peppol network’s address book. Before one Access Point can send a document to another, it must know three things: whether the receiver is registered, which document types the receiver accepts, and the URL and certificate of the Access Point that serves it. The SMP answers all three, over plain HTTPS, in a single request.

Discovery runs in two steps. The SML — the network’s root directory — resolves a participant identifier to the SMP that holds its record, using a hashed DNS lookup. That SMP then returns the participant’s capabilities. GoRoute operates the second half for the participants registered with us.

Is this participant reachable?

A registered identifier returns a ServiceGroup. An unregistered one returns 404 — which is the answer, not an error.

What can they receive?

One entry per document type — Peppol BIS Billing 3.0, PINT, or a national profile such as PINT OM for Oman. Sending an unsupported type fails before it leaves.

Where does it go, and is it signed?

The receiving Access Point’s AS4 endpoint and its Peppol G3 certificate, so the sender can encrypt to the right party and verify the response.

What is a Peppol SMP? +
A Service Metadata Publisher (SMP) is the registry that tells the Peppol network who is reachable and how. It holds each participant's identifier, the document types they accept, and the AS4 endpoint and certificate of the Access Point serving them. Sending Access Points query it before every transmission.
What is the difference between an SMP and an SML? +
The SML (Service Metadata Locator) is the network's root directory: it resolves a participant identifier to the SMP holding that participant's record, via a hashed DNS lookup. The SMP then returns the capabilities themselves. The SML says where to ask; the SMP gives the answer.
How do I check whether a participant is registered? +
Send an HTTPS GET to the SMP with the participant identifier, for example https://smp.goroute.ai/iso6523-actorid-upis::9959:872236341. A registered participant returns an XML ServiceGroup listing one reference per supported document type. An unregistered identifier returns HTTP 404 — that is a valid answer, not a fault.
Do I need my own SMP to send Peppol documents? +
No. You need to be registered in an SMP, which your Access Point provider handles. Operating your own SMP is only necessary if you are a service provider registering participants on your own certificate. GoRoute offers SMP-as-a-Service for providers in that position.
Is GoRoute's SMP certified? +
Yes. GoRoute is operated by ClayDesk LLC as a Peppol certified Access Point and SMP under Peppol identifier POP000991, using Peppol G3 certificates and AS4 v2 transport.
Which document types can be registered? +
Any Peppol document type, including Peppol BIS Billing 3.0, EN 16931 profiles, PINT, and national profiles such as PINT OM for Oman's Fawtara mandate. Each registered type appears as its own entry in the participant's ServiceGroup.
